It marks an end to a long stand-off, including strikes, over how to implement changes designed to deliver safer working hours.

The DHB chief executives unanimously approved the deal at a two-hour meeting in Wellington late this afternoon.

No details will be released until doctors have also ratified the document.

Earlier this week the Resident Doctors' Association said approval from its members would be delivered quickly.

The union staged two strikes as part of the roster dispute: the first for two days in October last year and the second - a three-day strike - last month.
