2:12 pm on 26 February 2017

A French tourist has been rescued by helicopter after getting trapped at the bottom of a steep ravine in the Falls Creek area in Fiordland.

The 20-year-old was rescued by a helicopter using a long line and scoop net.

He was reported missing by friends last night after failing to return from a day walk.

A search and rescue team found him at about 1.30am but couldn't physically reach him.

A Southern Lakes helicopter rescued the man about 8.30am.

Police said the terrain was incredibly steep, and it was remarkable the man didn't fall and seriously injure himself.

He is now recovering after being assessed for a knock to the head.
