The tourist was part of a group exploring Harwoods Hole, in the Takaka Hill.

She fell while abseiling near the bottom of the 170-metre deep shaft.

A Nelson Marlborough District Health Board spokesperson said she was in a stable condition.

The accident triggered a large-scale rescue involving police, fire and ambulance, as well as land and cave search-and-rescue volunteers.

The sinkhole is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.
