Fire risk expected to worsen

1:24 pm on 31 December 2008

The Rural Fire Service says the worst of the summer fire season is still to come.

National Rural Fire officer Murray Dudfield says conditions around much of New Zealand are not as dry as they were at this time last year, or the previous year.

He says this is due to rain during December which helped dampen the fire risk in many areas.

Mr Dudfield says the fire risk usually peaks during January and February.
