Manslaughter charges have been laid against two men over a car crash that killed four people allegedly street racing near Hamilton last year.

Dylan Cossey and Stephen Jones, both 20, appeared in the Hamilton District Court where the original charges, of causing death and injury and inciting unnecessary speed causing death, were upgraded to the more serious charges.

Both men now face four charges each of manslaughter.

The four young people who died were in a car being driven by Mr Cossey when it hit a van.

The crash happened late at night on State Highway 3 near Hamilton Airport.

The two accused have been remanded on bail to reappear in the High Court next month.
