Corrections and police are investigating the death of a prisoner at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison.

The prison's director, Nephi Hall, said medical staff provided immediate assistance to the man yesterday but could not revive him.
Mr Hall said the death had been referred to the coroner.
He said support was being provided to staff and prisoners.
