They said a vehicle failed to stop for a routine check on Bairds Road, Otara, South Auckland, about 4.40am.

Officers chased it through Paptoetoe and Otara for about four minutes before abandoning the pursuit because of safety concerns over the manner of driving.

A short time later it reappeared on Bairds Road, where it crashed.

As officers approached the vehicle, the man who had been driving pointed a firearm at them.

The officers pulled back and the man ran away. Police used a tracker dog but were unable to find him.

They are still trying to identify and find the man and said they have carried out forensic analysis of the vehicle and will be carrying out area enquiries across the wider Auckland area.
