Police in Indonesia believe they have found the body of a New Zealander swept away while trying to save his girlfriend.

It was believed Temson Mannie Junior Simeki, 23, jumped into the sea to rescue his friend after she was hit by a rogue wave while taking a selfie, AAP reported.

She was on the edge of a cliff at Angel's Billabong tourist spot on Nusa Penida island on Monday.

An Australian snorkeller rescued her, but Mr Simeki was not seen again.

A police chief said two fishermen found a body floating in Crystal Bay, near the cliff.

The body was taken to the local hospital for identification, AAP reported.
