Police target vehicles on Northland beach

2:51 pm on 4 January 2009

A Northland beach where a teenager was killed by a motorcyclist on New Year's Day last year is being closely patrolled by the police this summer.

The 13-year-old girl was killed when she was hit on Ripiro beach.

Senior Constable Ian Anderson from Dargaville Police will be patrolling the 100km beach.

Mr Anderson says the beach is classified as a road but the police will be cracking down hard on motorists who threaten the safety of beachgoers.

He says police will be targeting people showing off in vehicles and driving recklessly through sand dunes.

Mr Anderson says several other officers will also be backing up his patrols from time to time.
