A 38-year-old man and his 13-year-old son were pulled from their car before being assaulted in the attack at about 3.15pm on Saturday.

Both needed hospital treatment for their injuries but have since been released. The teenager has a fractured arm.

Two dogs in the vehicle were also kicked and beaten with the bats.

The attackers also damaged the man's car, a red Holden utility.

Several members of the public saw the attack and went to help the victims afterward.

Detective Sergeant Grayson Joines said police were following a number of lines of inquiry, but no arrests had been made.
