The boys were found by people who were walking in the area about 8.20am.

The boys, both aged 14, set off from the top of Wainuiomata Hill yesterday morning with minimal food and clothing.

They rang their parents using a cellphone in the afternoon to say they were lost, and search teams worked until late last night.

Searches involving five ground teams, a dog and a helicopter were carried out until midnight and ground teams resumed searching again this morning.

The boys were returned to their families and assessed by paramedics.
