Paper recycling plant ablaze in Auckland

4:27 pm on 7 January 2009

A fire at a recycling plant in South Auckland is expected to burn for two to three days.

Fifteen fire engines and 60 firefighters were called to the blaze at the Paper Reclaim plant on Hugo Johnston Drive near Penrose about midday on Wednesday.

The single-storey building is not far from the Southdown Meatworks, which was destroyed by fire last month.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service, Scott Osmond, says the roof area is being ventilated by aerial appliances, and this has stopped the fire from spreading.

Chief Fire Officer Brian Edwards says he is satisfied the fire will not spread any further.

Mr Edwards says it is unclear how the fire started and an investigation will begin when it is safe to enter the building.
