German man threatened to kill girlfriend before crash

A German man on a working holiday has pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his girlfriend while driving drunk and dangerously down a Central Otago road.

Jan Falke, 20, appeared via audio visual link in Dunedin District Court today on five charges including male assaults female, being an unlicensed driver and threatening to kill.

According to the police summary of facts, Falke got into an argument with his Belgian girlfriend at a camp site near Cromwell in January.

After getting drunk, he hit the woman while driving erratically down a road above a sheer drop into Lake Dunstan, and crashed into the safety barrier after failing to take a bend.

Falke was initially charged with attempted murder.

He will be sentenced in May.
