One person died in a two-car collision on State Highway 27 south of Patetonga on the Hauraki plains about midday.

Two other people in the same car were seriously injured, while the driver of the other vehicle was in a stable condition.

The road was closed and diversions were in place at Mangawara Road for southbound traffic, and Maukoro Landing Road for northbound traffic.

Police said it was too early to know if wet weather contributed to the crash.

Meanwhile, another person died in a road crash in Taupō, when two cars collided shortly after 2pm on Broadlands Road at Rotokawa.

Police said they expected the road to be closed for another three hours from 4pm.
