Attempt to steal ATM using car 'destined to fail'

Police say a Dunedin man's attempt to steal a cash machine using a 1991 Ford Falcon was destined to fail.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said witnesses reported seeing the man use the car to try and pull the ATM out of the wall with a strop in the suburb of Mornington about 5.45am on Friday.

Mr Aitken said the man caused some damage to the machine in the attempt and then went home, where he was arrested.

"It was never going to be successful. These machines are well anchored into the buildings - they're very, very heavy," Mr Aitken said.

"It would probably require something far more substantial from the vehicle he was trying to use to even think about trying it."

The 41-year-old will appear in court next week on a charge of burglary.
