A Honda was seen by police doing a burnout on Mangere Road at about 3am, and the driver fled at high speed after officers signalled at them to stop.

The car crashed into a building at the intersection of Mangere and Walmsley Roads shortly afterwards.

Police said a man who was a passenger died at the scene, while the driver has been taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.

The Serious Crash unit is investigating and the accident will be reported to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

Diversions are in place and the intersection is expected to remain closed until midday.
