Woman to defend false rape complaint charge

A Christchurch woman accused of making a false rape complaint is to defend the charge.

The 33-year-old, who has interim name suppression, told police she had been raped after meeting a group of men at Corsair Bay late last year.

Police initially charged four youths with stealing property from the complainant, but subsequently charged the woman herself with making a false statement and taking a knife into a police station.

On Monday, the woman's lawyer said his client had never retracted her statement to police and did not know why she had been charged.

The judge has called a further hearing for later this week to decide whether to continue name suppression and to hear more from police about why the charge was laid.
