Accidents prompt warning to jetskiers

9:36 pm on 12 January 2009

Jetskiers are being urged to watch out for swimmers after two incidents within minutes of each other off the Bay of Plenty coast on Sunday afternoon.

A jetskier struck a 13-year-old boy who was swimming in the ski lane of Ohiwa Harbour, east of Whakatane.

A short while later, another jetski rider collided with four children at nearby Ohope Beach.

None of those involved in the two accidents was said to have been seriously injured.

The local harbourmaster says jetskiers need to be aware of swimmers and other obstacles such as logs, even when they are in a jetski zone.

Carl Magazinovic says the speed limit within 200 metres of the Bay of Plenty shoreline is five knots, about a brisk walking pace.
