The death of a man who was killed when a boulder rolled on him in North Otago on Monday, has been referred to the coroner.

Deane Shute, 48, of Owaka, was laying possum bait in the Omarama area, when a large boulder came loose on a steep slope and trapped him beneath it.

He died at the scene and was discovered later that day by work colleagues.

It took several hours for emergency services to shift the boulder.

Sergeant Wayne Brew says Mr Shute was well known in the Otago area, and had been a long time member of the Owaka Search and Rescue Squad.
