Robbed French tourists to continue holiday

Police in Kaitaia say three French tourists who were attacked in their campervan last week are continuing their New Zealand holiday.

Two men broke into their vehicle where they were sleeping in a layby near Mangamuka and robbed them.

Detective Sergeant Mark Robertson says the men were not able to give clear descriptions of their attackers because it was dark and things happened quickly.

However, he says police have had a good response from the public and are following some useful leads.

Mr Robertson says the tourists have had many offers from people wanting to offer hospitality and they have decided not to let the robbery ruin their trip. They are to go home on Friday.

The Mangamuka community has held a meeting at the marae to discuss the attack.

Cyril Chapman, who runs the Tautoko FM radio station, says commentators have assumed the robbers must have been from Mangamuka.

But he says the assault on the tourists was on the night of a large tangi which has left people feeling even more upset.
