A tourist is recovering in Nelson after being dragged 100 metres behind a car in which he had hitch-hiked a lift.
Nelson police say the 23-year-old Chilean tourist was retrieving his pack from the boot of the car when its driver took off.
They say the tourist held on to his bag and was dragged along behind the car until it eventually came free.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen the incident, which took place near the Night Owl dairy on Waimea Road late on Tuesday afternoon.
Two Maori men were driving the dark-coloured Mitsubshi Geneva.
