Auckland missing out on new tourism fund - ATEED

An Auckland tourism group says it's missing out on the government's new tourism fund even though the city has had a record number of visitors this past summer.

More than 1 million people visited Auckland during the summer, an increase of 7 percent on the previous year.

However, the head of the tourism development agency ATEED said the government's fund was targeted towards regions with a smaller ratepayer base and Auckland didn't meet the criteria.

Jason Hill said more money was needed for infrastructure to accommodate visitors, such as a cruise terminal and light rail to the airport.

"We'd like to be working with the government and also the local council here to make that funding does become available, there's certainly a number of projects that need to be progressed in Auckland."
