'Strong' 4.6 magnitude quake strikes near Kaikōura

3:26 pm on 22 May 2017

A "strong" magnitude 4.6 earthquake has struck near Kaikōura this afternoon.

The quake hit at 2.10pm, and was centred 15km north-east of Kaikōura, at a depth of 17km.

GeoNet has rated the quake as "strong", with more than 160 people reporting that they felt the shake.

Kaikōura mayor Winston Gray said there had been no reports of damage.

He said he he felt the shake in the district council's building but he would be surprised if it had caused any damage in the area.

The region has been struggling with the after-effects of November's big 7.8 quake, with some Kaikōura businesses close to collapse as visitor numbers dwindle.
