Maersk reviews policy on unsustainably caught fish

The world's largest shipping container company has clarified its position on the transportation of fish species it believes are not caught sustainably.

Maersk Line earlier this week said it intends to work with the New Zealand Government and fishing industry on the possibility of discontinuing shipments of fish which do not meet its international policy of operating sustainably in all areas of business.

The halt on shipments could include orange roughy, which earned New Zealand $51 million in exports last year.

The company says it accepts all seafood shipments in New Zealand which meet local legislation and from exporters that comply with the relevant regulations.

Maersk Line says it is reviewing its acceptance policy for future seafood shipments.
