An Auckland souvenir shop is being fined $6000 for falsely claiming its royal jelly was a product of New Zealand.

The shop, Royal Deer of New Zealand, has been fined after being convicted on two charges of breaching the Fair Trading Act.

Commerce Commission enforcement manager Greg Allan said the company imported royal jelly powder from China and packaged it in New Zealand.

He says the false claims not only misled consumers, but could also adversely affect competitors who were making genuine claims about product made in New Zealand.

Mr Allan says New Zealand royal jelly is popular because it is of high quality.

The souvenir shop is one of three companies facing action.

New Zealand Natural Care Products was fined $15,000 earlier this month over similar claims, and another company is due to be sentenced in early July.
