Cars trapped in Tauranga flood waters

At least one road is still closed and several properties have been flooded in the Bay of Plenty after heavy rain early this morning.

Two drivers had to be rescued from their cars after they got trapped in Maleme St in Greerton, Tauranga.

A home on The Mall, Mt Manganui is water damaged, and the ANZ Bank and a cafe in Waihi are also flooded.

Metservice said up to 100mm of rain is expected to fall between 7am and 3pm today.

It is warning people to look out for rapidly rising rivers and streams, and surface flooding.

The Fire Service said it had had 10 flood-related call outs this morning.
