Name suppression for the man charged with murdering Whanganui woman Marice McGregor has expired.

Dean Richard Mulligan, 42, of Feilding, went to police on Tuesday night.

He made his first court appearance on Wednesday, limping into the dock as he has an artificial leg.

Mr Mulligan was granted temporary name suppression until 4pm on Friday to inform all family members, despite police arguing that his relatives had already been told.

The judge also ordered a psychiatric report and remanded the accused in custody for three weeks.

Police say Ms McGregor, 45, was killed on 19 April, the day she was last seen alive. They seized a van and searched a property in Feilding during the hunt for her killer.

Police found her body in a bush-filled ravine near State Highway 4, about 36km north of Whanganui, on 13 May.
