Motorists in Christchurch are being told to expect delays today, as runners take part in the city's annual marathon.

During past marathons, traffic has been brought to a standstill during the day, with ambulances in 2015 left unable to reach Christchurch Hospital.

The city's transport operations manager, Ryan Cooney, said thousands of competitors registered for the run around Hagley Park and along the Avon River.

He said it would not be possible to drive across the route from 5am until 2pm this afternoon, and motorists would need to plan for delays.
