Group to decide on waste water policy after election

6:49 pm on 17 August 2010

One of the main political groupings for Auckland's super city elections will wait until after local body elections to decide whether to introduce a user-pays system for waste water.

Citizens and Ratepayers' new candidate George Wood interrupted chairperson John Slater in public on Tuesday to say he did not agree with any policy of user-pays for waste water.

Mr Slater says the centre-right ticket's policy on waste water will not be announced until after the election, but its policy is generally user-pays.

Mr Wood, a former North Shore mayor, says he wants wide consultation with the community before any decision is made.

He says user-pays is not a term that had been used in Citizen and Ratepayers' manifesto and more discussion within the team is needed.

Candidates named

Citizens and Ratepayers announced new council candidates for its platform and endorsed independent Alex Swney in the key seat of Waitemata-Gulf.

Chairperson John Slater says the decision to back Mr Swney was made after Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett could not stand due to ill-health.

Mr Slater says if elected, he expects Mr Swney to work with Citizens and Ratepayers on key issues.

Mr Swney says many of the details are yet to be worked out, but envisaged it would be like an MMP arrangement.

He would not be drawn on who he will vote for as mayor, choosing not to endorse John Banks or Len Brown.

Manukau City Councillor Bob Wichman was named as candidate for Manukau.
