Two experts from Maritime New Zealand are helping in the clean-up of oil from an undersea leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

An equipment technician and a response planner are working for three weeks with a British company

Maritime NZ says they will gain invaluable experience, benefiting New Zealand's spill response planning.

The agency says its personnel often help in international spills but this is the largest they have been involved with.

The leak in the Gulf began after a drilling rig, which was leased to BP, exploded on 20 April, killing 11 workers. It sank two days later.
