The gecko, know as Graham, was reported missing to the police earlier this week after it's locked terrarium was found to have been forced open.

Department of Conservation Te Anau operations manager Greg Lind said the terrarium had been refreshed with food and leaves mid-afternoon on 16 July.

When the Ranger returned three days later, the padlock had been removed and the gecko was missing.

Mr Lind said Graham the gecko was more than 30 years old and had a distinctive grey mark on his head.

"It's our longest serving advocacy animal in Fiordland, and staff just want it back safe," Mr Lind said.

He said the department wanted to hear from anyone with information on the theft.

"The police have been notified, and we are asking everyone to keep their eyes open."

The Marlborough green gecko can grow up to 70mm long and is classified as an At Risk species.
