Discrimination against Maori tipped as result of gang bylaw

5:23 am on 3 September 2009

Green co-leader Metiria Turei says a bylaw against gang patches in Wanganui will fuel discrimination against Maori.

Ms Turei warns police could use their new powers to stop Maori and search them and their cars for insignia.

She told Waatea News the by-law which came into force on 1 September is clearly focused on predominantly Maori gangs like the Mongrel Mob and Black Power

Ms Turei said the bylaw would have been worse if the Green Party had not got tattoo and moko excluded from the ban.
