Three people were killed when a car crashed into a stationary truck and trailer in Levin early this morning and was engulfed in flames, police say.

Police said the driver of the car and two passengers died at the crash on Cambridge Street in the Horowhenua town shortly after midnight.

The car burst into flames, and engulfed both the car and truck and trailer unit, police said.

The car has been removed and the police said the formal identification process would take some time.

There was noone in the truck.

It is still not known what caused the crash.

People at the scene after the crash said the car came from Macarthur Street, and hit the side of the double tractor unit, which was parked at the side of the T-intersection with Cambridge Street.

It was stacked with large rolls of paper.
