A 42-year-old tourist is in critical condition in Auckland Hospital after being assaulted in the central city early this morning.
The Tongan man has serious head injuries, and is possibly the victim of a road rage attack.
Police said he was walking down the middle of Kitchener Street impeding traffic.
A car stopped and the occupants spoke to the man.
The car then drove off at speed, leaving the man lying on the ground.
