Bill to establish Rugby World Cup agency

8:03 pm on 12 June 2010

A Rugby World Cup Empowering Bill has been introduced to Parliament.

The bill will enable a temporary Rugby World Cup agency to be established, provides for urgent consents and establishes a liquor licensing scheme.

The Government says existing approval processes are not sufficient to cater for the extraordinary requirements of the tournament.

It says the legislation will not try to alter the criteria for consenting decisions, but simply expedite the process for approvals.

Local Government New Zealand also says the temporary legislation is needed.
