A Queenstown woman who was sexually assaulted in her home early this morning may have been followed there by her attacker, police say.

Police said the man got into the woman's house, in the suburb of Fernhill, through an unlocked front door and assaulted her in her bedroom.

She told officers the sound of her phone ringing repeatedly appeared to spook the intruder, who escaped by climbing out the bathroom window.

Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron said the attack was extremely worrying and police wanted help from the public to catch the man.
