The Wellington City Council says it hopes to have Ngaio Gorge Road open again for tomorrow's evening rush hour.

The road, an important link between the central city and its western suburbs, has been closed for two weeks because of rockfalls.

The council said work had continued through the weekend on a realignment of the uphill lane and to secure a line of shipping containers to protect the road from any further rockfalls.

During off-peak periods the road just above the slip site will continue to be one-way only while work continues on the construction of a retaining wall.
