NZ diplomat to take leading role in climate talks

A New Zealand diplomat with a top role in climate change talks says he will work hard to bring them to a conclusion later this year.

Adrian Macey has been appointed vice-chair of the Kyoto Protocol negotiations.

Speaking from Bonn, where the negotiations have been taking place, Dr Macey says he is ready for the new challenge.

He says New Zealand is perceived as being constructive, and is often able to broker solutions in multilateral negotiations.

Climate Change Negotiations Minister Tim Groser says the appointment shows New Zealand is a highly regarded, constructive player in the negotiations.

Greenpeace says, however, that Dr Macey's appointment came despite the objections of some developing countries, which doubted New Zealand's commitment to climate change.
