A Tauranga fisherman, who built his own aluminium boat, has been reported missing.
Police said the 60-year-old went fishing just after 7am and had been expected back about noon, but had not returned.
He was fishing in his homemade 3m aluminium boat, which has a centre console and an outboard motor.
A search and rescue operation began looking for the man this evening.
His brother spoke to three people at the Sulphur Point boat ramp this afternoon, and police said they remembered seeing a similar boat anchored to a buoy out at sea.
Police said they were very keen to speak to those people.
