Television New Zealand says equipment worth $100,000 has been stolen in South Africa.

The gear included recording, editing and transmission equipment being used to help cover the Football World Cup.

TVNZ says the theft happened while cameraman Tony George and reporter Donna-Marie Lever were staying at a hotel in Rustenburg near the venue for the first All Whites game.

The company says one or more thieves jimmied open a hotel room door while Mr George and Ms Lever were having dinner.

The stolen gear included a state of the art satellite transmission device.

The broadcaster will be using equipment from US company Associated Press until it can organise replacement gear.
