Bain killings to be subject of play

The Bain family killings in 1994 is about to be the subject of a stage play in Wellington.

The December Brother is being devised by the Seeyd Theatre Company for a public premiere in August.

At a trial lasting 13 weeks in the High Court at Christchurch last year, David Bain was found not guilty of the murders of his parents and three siblings.

He claimed his father, Robin Bain, killed the family and has begun a compensation claim for the 13 years he spent in prison.

In one of its three acts, The December Brother will examine the Bain case.

Downstage Theatre chief executive Hilary Beaton says both sides of the legal argument provoked strong public opinion.

Mr Bain's supporter Joe Karam says he has no comment on the play.

The Justice for Robin Bain Group, which opposes Mr Bain's compensation bid, also declined to comment.
