Driver dead after hitting tree during police pursuit

Police in Christchurch say it appears the officers who chased a car which crashed, killing the driver, were following the correct procedure.

The driver, Troy Peter MacKay, 22, died after his car hit a tree on Halswell Road at 12.20am on Sunday.

Inspector Malcolm Johnston says the police gave chase when they saw the car being driven dangerously, and were half a kilometre behind when it struck a traffic island and hit a tree.

Two female passengers, aged 18 and 29, were taken to hospital, and one is still in the intensive care unit in a stable condition.

The fatality is the eighth associated with a police chase in the past six months.

Mr Johnston says he's spoken to the officers and reviewed the transcript of the pursuit, and it appears to him they were following the correct pursuit procedure.

But he says that will be for the Independent Police Complaints Authority, which will investigate the incident, to determine.

In October last year, the IPCA recommended that police pursuit policy be amended to provide clearer guidance to officers on when a pursuit should be started.
