The body was found in the stairwell of the building on Auckland's Great North Road late on Tuesday evening.

Police said they would not be releasing the name of the victim until formal identification was completed and next of kin had been notified.

The labourer charged with the murder appeared in Auckland District Court this morning dressed in a police-issue boiler suit.

The man was flanked by two security guards and stood with his head bowed during the brief hearing.

His lawyer, Annabel Cresswell, told the court her client was known to mental health services and asked for interim name suppression.

Judge Margaret Rogers granted the application, which will be reviewed when the man appears in the High Court next month.
