Watercare said a small crew were breaking open concrete around a pipeline in Ladies Mile, Remuera at about midday and struck a live electrical cable, "creating a flash".

The water company said the crew were hand-digging the area and the site has been cordoned off.

The injured man was taken to hospital.

Watercare spokesperson said the worker's family had been informed.

He said despite earlier reports, the crew were not underground at the time.

"They were working in a shallow excavation in the berm when the incident occurred."

WorkSafe has been notified and Watercare has begun an investigation as to the cause of the accident."

Four fire crews were sent to the scene.

All diversions in the area have now been lifted.
