New Zealand troops in Afghanistan have successfully disposed of a 100-kilogram Russian bomb which had been exposed by heavy rain.

The Defence Force says troops suspect the severely corroded shell had been there since the Russian occupation between 1978 and 1989.

The device was found in the Bamyan Province of Afghanistan, which had been subject to heavy aircraft bombing.

It took 16 hours for the soldiers to lift the bomb out of the ground and transport it in a special trolley to a disposal site.
