The country's top censor, Bill Hastings, is stepping down after 12 years in the job.

He is to take up a position as a District Court judge and chairman of the Immigration and Protection Tribunal.

The Department of Internal Affairs says finding a replacement could take up to nine months and until then the deputy chief censor, Nicola McCully, will fulfill the role.
