Predictive Maori texting 'should be available to all'

8:27 am on 22 June 2010

The Maori Language Commission says predictive text in Maori should be available to all cellphone users.

At present, only one of three telecommunication networks offers the service on its handsets.

Telecom initially launched 100 Maori words on three of its XT mobile phones last year.

It has increased the number of words to 145, and installed predictive Maori text on six XT handsets.

Maori Language Commission acting commissioner Wayne Ngata is encouraging Vodafone and 2Degrees to consider installing the service on phones they sell.

The companies say they would if there's a demand that would make it financially viable.
