South African murderer leaves NZ

7:07 pm on 9 October 2017

A South African psychiatrist who murdered his wife in Dunedin has been deported back to South Africa.

Colin Bouwer was convicted in 2001 of poisoning his wife Annette, some time between November 1999 and January 2000, and sentenced to life in prison for a minimum of 13 years - later extended to 15 years on appeal by the Crown.

In September, the Parole Board agreed to release Bouwer in October, on condition he immediately agree to return to South Africa.

Immigration New Zealand has confirmed he left New Zealand this morning.
