Police in Dunedin have arrested a wanted man who was armed after an early morning chase.

Police were called to the Dunedin hill suburb of Belleknowes after a report of unsafe driving at 3.15am, a police spokesperson said.

After a "very short pursuit" the driver abandoned his car after he crashed and fled on foot in Preston Crescent.

"Dogs were deployed and police put a cordon in place," the spokesperson said.

The man was tracked and located in nearby bush and arrested at about 3.50am.

He was found in possession of a firearm and drug utensils. There was an outstanding warrant for his arrest, police said.

The 27-year-old Dunedin man will appear in Dunedin District Court today on charges of failing to appear in court, failing to stop for police, unlawfully possessing a firearm and possessing drug utensils.
