Several children were in the house when Hayley Williams, 43, was shot dead on Sunday afternoon, including her own.

A 45-year-old man was arrested yesterday, near a marae north of Hokitika, after a 24-hour search by armed officers.

The man, who has interim name suppression, appeared in court this morning where he entered no plea to the murder charge.

Several people had to be removed from court and abuse was yelled at the accused during his appearance.

The man has been remanded in custody until he reappears in a fortnight.

Police said they were not looking for anyone else.

A cordon still surrounds the Marsden Road property where Ms Williams died, and tarpaulins have been laid down and a black tent has been set up on the driveway.

Officers are still looking for the gun used to shoot Ms Williams.

Ms Williams' three sons - aged 12, 10 and seven - were in the house at the time of the shooting but it's not clear how much they saw.

Police said people in the area could expect investigators to be there for the next few days.
